Since then, Foster’s sometimes humorous, occasionally poignant, but always entertaining short fiction has appeared in all major science fiction magazines and anthologies and several “Best of the Year” compendiums. His first attempt at a novel, The Tar-Aiym Krang, was published by Ballantine Books in 1972. His writing career began in 1968 when August Derleth bought a long Lovecraftian letter of Foster’s in 1968 and published it as a short story. After receiving Bachelors and Master’s degrees at UCLA, he spent two years as a copywriter for a small Studio City, California PR firm.

A terrible movie can not be polished but hats off both to the author and narrator for a sparkling novelisation well-delivered - thank you for rolling this 'episode' in as much glitter as your obvious talents could achieve.Born in New York City in 1946, Foster was raised in Los Angeles.

What we get in this instance is a needlessly dark, C-grade, teenage series of events and depictions. The only thing left to redeem the story at this stage is the horror and suspense that so brilliantly defines the Alien universe. They bumble their way through every scene, inevitably ending up in pointless trouble by their incredibly frustrating lack of professionalism and foresight. As a result of the particularly poor intrigue, the characters act as if they found their tickets in cereal boxes. It's hard to believe that such an esteemed franchise could produce an episode intent on structuring itself exclusively on plot holes, but after the abject disaster that Star Wars has become, it stands to reason that no one is necessarily immune.

But honestly, I could have done without this.Īn ordinary episode that may ruin the franchise If you start with the entire series, I would advise you to start with book 3 (based on the first movie), work to the end, and THEN read book 1 (origins) and 2 (convenant). Why still get this book? If it is on sale, and you are a completionist. The action sequences are ruined for me because of that. He tries to restrain his voice so that it is not too loud, but it just sounds like spoken high pitched cartoon shrieks. In the beginning of the book it is not so noticeable yet, but it really starts to grate after a while. With both genders it just sounds like monty phyton women in a sketch yelling "spam spam spam". Because most of the dialogue in the later scenes is people screaming at each other (yelling instructions, screaming that there is a monster behind the other one) it really spoils the tension and atmosphere. It sounds downright weird, kind of comical. In both cases, he pitches his voice in a really strange, high, affected way. One: he can not do women's voices properly, and two he can not do screaming people well. Narration: The narrator has a pleasant reading voice, and I would happily read any regular audiobook narrated by him. If you didn't see that one coming, you must be equally dense as some of the characters in this book. Also, every plot twist is telegraphed a mile in advance, including the last, final 'shocker'.

Not how a particular group of people dislikes their coworkers and other petty things. The strength of the Aliens series is humans trying to escape, fighting a monster. Why care about them? Why not spend those first 3 hours upping the tension and scare-factor instead of telling us about unpleasant people? There is just no adrenaline. It is just not a fun bunch to get to know. None of the characters except maybe Daniels are sympathetic, all seem incredible incompetent and willfully obtuse. It is mostly descriptive: 'This is the hardass one, she was the smart one, and so on. So does it really matter who they are and what their motivations may be? The characterizations themselves are bad. Since this is the Aliens series and none of them are called Ripley, you know they are expandable anyway. They are spend trying to describe the human characters and their relationships. Second, this is already a very short book, but the first 3 hours nothing really happens. It is just a run of the mill technology runs amuck origins story. I say 'ruin', because it is much less scary than whatever you imagine it may be when you first saw the Aliens movie, or heard any of the later books & audiodramas in the series.

With that, it kind of ruins/spoils the threat and mystique of the rest of the series. Because of that, it tries to explain how the xenomorphs came about. Story: Even though this is the first (second if you count origins) Aliens book, it came out very late in the series/movie series. I will try to explain why without spoilers. Only get it if you want the whole Aliens series
